About 1 month ago I did a post on gout and now dear hubby is having another episode. Thankfully this one seems to be much shorter in duration than the last few. Maybe because we started our home remedies sooner, but then again maybe not!
We have continued with the previous treatments I mentioned last time and we have had friends graciously lend us their crutches which has helped him to be able to stay off of his foot.
We did go to the holistic Dr earlier this week which seems helpful. She had a lot to say of which hopefully it will help us decrease the frequency and durations of his episodes. All of what she said made so much sense, hopefully it will make a difference!
So first off, she said genetically he may just produce more uric acid of which a buildup in the joints is what causes the gout pain. If this is the case, there are some things that can be done to help bring the production down of which one is eating a low purine diet. This would include reducing pork, organ meats, beans, peas, lentils, seafood, alcohol, caffeine and fried foods. From this list we rarely eat beans, peas, lentils, seafood or fried foods. We have alcohol and pork about once a week and organ meats about once a month. Caffeine on the other hand… no sodas, but Brian does tend to drink about 2-3 cups of coffee a day, so we may have to start limiting that.
Dr. Kim also mentioned the fact that uric acid is excreted in the urine, so it may be that his blood filtration system isn’t functioning 100%. This would include the spleen, liver, gallbladder and kidneys. To increase their efficiency and function she put him on two new supplements.
The first is CoQ10 which is a naturally occurring antioxidant that helps cardiovascular health and energy levels. The other supplement is Sarsaparilla which helps with inflammatory responses, but also is a mild detoxifier and will help to clean his vascular system.
We are going to give both of these a 2 month trial and see how they do and if he has any recurrences. So we have started and we will see how it works! Hopefully it helps and we can reduce the frequency of these attacks.
Stay tuned! I’m sure there will be more to come!
