Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet
by Jamie Ford

I really enjoyed this book!  It was a very easy and quick read that I would classify as historical fiction as well as a love story.  I know I’ve mentioned it 1001 times, but WWII history really fascinates me! Continue reading “Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet”

Shopping for Time

Shopping for Time
By Carolyn Mahaney, Nicole Whitacre, Kristin Chesemore and Janelle Bradshaw

This is a book that has been on my list to read since it first came out.  These ladies I highly respect and look up to. I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Nicole for a few years, until her family moved down south for her husband to go to seminary.  The rest of the family is further north or us and doesn’t attend the same church as our family. Left To Tell

Left To Tell
By Immaculee Ilibagiza

WOW!  I don’t even have words to describe what this book did to me.  I had no idea what the Rwandan genocide entailed…. nearly a million Rwandans lost their lives in nearly 100 days.  The author of this book survived by being hidden in a very small bathroom with seven other woman for 91 days. They had standing room only and were never sure when they would get a meal, often 1 meal every few days for them all to share. Continue reading “Left To Tell”

The Post-Office Girl
By Stefan Zweig
Translated by Joel Rotenberg

This was another book recommended by the World Magazine and it was originally written in German.  As many of you well know I’m interested in all things German, WWII, Holocaust, Jew, etc.  This book doesn’t actually fill those joys, but it is slightly similar!  It takes place in Austria after WWI.   Continue reading “The Post-Office Girl”

Nourishing Traditions Book Review: Part XXX – Appendices

This is the LAST post from this book!  Can you believe it!  Well… the last scheduled post.  When I find more fantastic recipes in the book I’ll definitely have to post those as well!  I’m so excited to be at the end, but sad as well.  I’m glad I’ve finally finished… but it was nice to have something consistent and routine to make me finish getting through all of it!   Continue reading “Nourishing Traditions Book Review: Part XXX – Appendices”

Nourishing Traditions Book Review: Part XXIX – Tonics & Superfoods

Tonics.  I’ve never been one to have faith in them or even really know or understand their use or purpose.  The first recipe caught my attention first off.  It is a tonic called Potassium Broth.  It is recommended to be used as pick-me-up and drunk like a warm tea.  It’s also said to be a great rejuvenator for the sick or who are recovering from child birth. I won’t be using this for a long time, but I do plan on making a batch for late May! I’ll let you know what I think of it! Memoirs of a Geisha
by Arthur Golden

I know this book wasn’t on my reading list for this year, but some of the books I’ve been wanting to read aren’t at the library and I just don’t want to purchase a book that I’m not sure I’m even going to like.  I’m going to wait it out a bit and see if they actually show up eventually at the library or if maybe I can find some of them for cheap at a used book store. Paradise Valley
by Dale Cramer

I’ve always been fascinated with the Amish way of life.  I’ve been to Lancaster and a long time ago I went with a friend to a conference (if you can call it that… more like a church gathering/service that lasted all weekend) there as well.  I don’t fully agree with their beliefs, but there is something appealing about their way of life.  The quiet, peace, tranquility and reward of hard work.  I know, I know they work HARD.  They have to provide their own daily bread, purely by hard labor. But it still intrigues me! Continue reading “Paradise Valley”

Nourishing Traditions Book Review – Part XXVIII – Feeding Babies

Prior to reading this chapter I didn’t think it was going to apply to me… too much… However, there was a lot more information than I expected, and it wasn’t all about breastfeeding or formula feeding! Continue reading “Nourishing Traditions Book Review – Part XXVIII – Feeding Babies”
