This dish has been one of dear hubby’s favorites over the past few years. There is also another friend of ours that always talks about the time we had this dish together. It became one of his favorite meals and most times when we were together it was brought up one way or another! Continue reading “Thai Chicken Basil”

[/amazon_link]Loving Our Kids on Purpose
By Danny Silk
I decided to go ahead and try to complete one of my other goals for 2014 which is to read at least one book on parenting this year. I went to a homeschool curriculum sale recently and found this book. The mother selling it said the ideas and concepts, for her, were revolutionary and really changed the way she related to and parented her children.
Hmm… that’s a pretty good review and she was only selling the DVD presentation and book for $6. Seems worth it to give it a try! Brian and I watched the first session together and thought it was good, but not great. We also questioned some of his theology in the process.
I did read the whole book and I wouldn’t really recommend it. There was quite a bit I didn’t necessarily agree with, especially Silk’s view of God and His relationship to humanity, parents and children. Even though I didn’t like the book as a whole, there were two big concepts that have been helpful for me.
1. “Yellow trucking” your children.
This photo illustrates what I will try to explain. The basic concept is bulling or top downing our children into doing what we want them to do. Punishing to get the behavior we desire. Giving strict boundaries on behavior for behaviors sake and not getting at the heart of the issue.
This was a good reminder to me. I needed the swift kick in the pants to stop having a god complex and telling my children what to do because it’s what I, as self appointed god, think they need to do. There are areas that need a strong hand, but most areas of life are options and have a lot of God given freedom… we need to train and help our children manage the freedom they have in Christ.
That leads me to the second point.
2. Giving your children choices and options instead of demanding absolute, but passive obedience.
I personally think he took this one too far, although the idea has really helped me with Aisling. She is strong willed and often fights or pushes back on everything we tell her to do. I’ve realized that I don’t need to make our relationship a war zone. I need to connect with her and meet her where she is. There are many areas that she needs to learn to obey, like “Stop, there is a car in the street.” But there are other areas that I need to offer her more choices. “Aisling would you like to wear the blue shirt or the purple shirt today?” instead of “Here, Aisling, put this on.”
As I’ve started to use this manor of relating to her, when it’s an option, it’s amazing how much better she does. She has feelings, opinions and convictions and I need to take the time to talk to her and hear her heart. As I’ve tried really hard to do this I’ve found that not only does she make good choices (for the most part) on her own, but then when I need her to obey, she does a much better job of not only doing it, but doing it cheerfully!
So… If you can understand those points you don’t need to read the book…. but if you want more info about them or more details, then read it, but with a grain of salt. Read it with a critical eye and evaluate for yourself all that he says.
I hope you found this helpful! If you’ve read this book, or have seen his presentations, I’d love to know what you think!
Paleo Mayo
Back in 2011 I did a post on fermented mayonnaise which I used for quite a while. However, as life as gotten busier I haven’t been quite as good about planning ahead. I do still try to ferment my mayonnaise, mustard and ketchup as much as possible, but life happens and sometimes it just doesn’t get done. It doesn’t take long, but it means I need to think ahead a little more.
I also don’t like to store it for too long in the fridge as it does end up going bad if it’s in there for more than 2 weeks. For mayo, we only typically use it for our ranch salad dressing recipe or to make tuna salad. Otherwise it just takes up fridge room!
But… I do have a basic paleo mayo recipe that I frequently use as I DEFINITELY don’t buy the stuff! It’s super simple and only takes a few minutes to whip up (literally)!
I have found that using coconut oil makes it pretty sweet and we don’t like that too much, but light olive oil works find and doesn’t have an overbearing olive oil flavor. It’s been a favorite here! We’ve also subbed out some of the olive oil for sesame oil for a little Asian flair, or add a little garlic and onion for more flavor, or even horseradish… mmmm! That’s REALLY good in tuna salad!
Basic Paleo Mayo Recipe
Ingredients:
- 2 room temperature pastured eggs
- 2 TBSP apple cider vinegar (or fresh lemon juice)
- 1 tsp fine celtic sea salt
- 2 cups light olive oil
Instructions:
- Combine the eggs, vinegar, salt, in a food processor and pulse a few times until smooth.
- With the food processor running, add the olive oil a little at a time – almost drop by drop at first – until an emulsion starts to form. I use the top of the food processor that has the little hole in the cup and drips it in perfectly.
- Continue adding the rest of the oil in a slow, steady stream.
- Add more salt or other ingredients to taste.
- Store, tightly covered, in the refrigerator.
I store this in the fridge for about 1 month. Occasionally it gets some mold on top. I scoop it off and keep using. I know some people would be a little more cautious. It is definitely mold free for at least two weeks.
Give it a try and let me know what you think! We eat it up!!!!
Common Core Documentary
There has been a lot of talk these days about the Common Core and what that is. I was alerted by HSLDA that a short documentary was recently completed and is free to view online to help bring some light to the topic. The video is a little less than 40 minutes and offers a lot of information as well as some insight added from those who helped develop and fund them.
I found this short documentary informative. Whether you agree with the new standards or disagree I thought it was well written and put together. I highly recommend that as many people as possible view this so that we can all be informed and act on the information we’ve obtained.
Here is a link to the Common Core Standards which are made public for anyone to view.
There were 4 main problems that stood out to me. There were other topics addresses, but these four were what caught my attention.
- This seems to be an attempt to industrialize education when there is so much more to factor in than just standards and trying to get all children to achieve the same goal. These are little people we are teaching. They all learn differently, at different rates and with different cultural filters. These need to be taken into consideration by state and county and even each community.
- These standards are government mandated. Why is the government even involved in creating a nationwide standard and then offering money to the states that adopt them? Doesn’t money alter perceptions and incentivize something that maybe should be looked at more critically? Why is there money being given in the first place if this is something that is going to improve public education?
- By 2011 – 45% of states had adopted the standards and by 2013 65% of the public had never heard of the common core. This is a big problem in my book. If this is going to affect all of the children in public schools, then parents should know about this. Shouldn’t they have a say? How do they not even know what is going to change in their own schools for their own children!
- How do we know these are better? They may improve some areas and some schools standards, but it also lower others. Apparently, these standards state that each child who graduates highschool will be college ready… but this does not mean it will be enough to get into selective universities. In fact, SAT and ACT testing has been simplified to match the common core standards.
Our constitution is based on people governing themselves. The common core is or the people, but is it by the people? The Common Core, to me, seems to be a way for the government to systematize education making it easier to manage, but not necessarily better for the children.
I do think this is worth taking the 40 minutes to watch, and I’d love to know your thoughs and opinions. I will end with my favorite quote of the whole moving from Ze’ev Wurman, who was a 2010 Member of CA Academic Content Standards Commission and Former US Dept of Education Official.
“Is it the government’s right to teach the child what the government thinks the child should know or is it my child and I should have some say in it?”

This Burning Land: Lesson from the Front Lines of the Transformed Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

Tropical Traditions Coconut Oil and GIVEAWAY!
This is a first! I have a giveaway! 😉 So exciting! 😉 It seems like a blog has “made it” when there are giveaways. And… consequently I’ve tried to avoid that at all costs. I didn’t want to fall into the mainstream and just float along with everyone else, just because that’s the way its done and that’s how you get and keep readers. He has Risen – Happy Easter
Easter is so much more than cute bunnies, easter baskets, pastel colors, colored eggs, baby chicks, and lots of candy. Easter is about new life. Life that’s been given to us that we don’t deserve and that came at a great cost.
There is no way I could live with out sin. I go to bed each night VERY aware of how I’ve failed my family, been a poor example of Christ to my children and haven’t served my husband in the way I’ve been called. There is no hope for me, but in Christ. BUT CHIRST. Those words are huge. That is what makes me different.
I am nothing and can be nothing on my own… BUT Christ.
I AM a failure to my family… BUT Christ.
I’m a hopeless case… BUT Christ.
I’m not worthy of mercy and grace… BUT Christ.
I can’t pay my debts for all my sin… BUT Christ.
This list could go on and should go on. The more I realize my failures, the large Christ becomes. The larger my sin, the more I see my need for Him. Daily I need Christ. Daily His sacrifice is covering my sin.
I’m ever grateful and ever joyful for the gift that cost a life, that was freely given to me. that is a costly gift… I would never give the life of my son as a gift for another and yet that is exactly what God did for me in the life of His Son. My life has been changed by Him.
Here is a great video that is worth your time!
House Decor {Final Reveal}
So this is it!!! I’m finished! Finally! I’m so tickled and so pleased with each corner! I’m also happy that it’s still kid friendly. There isn’t anything (except my grandmother’s quilt on the corner of the couch) that isn’t off limits for them! And it was done on the cheap so I’m not attached to it and I can replace for cheap from the thrift store as need be!

Also, since this was so much fun and is so rewarding I thought I’d do it again… this time in the master bedroom… So… these design, painting and crafting posts will continue for a few more weeks as I add more projects to a new room!
There were two small last things to finish up. I had two more pillows to recover which I was able to find a dress (the orange and blue pillow) that had a broken shoulder strap and some scrap fabric at a clothing swap for free! So the recovering project only cost me in time! As an added bonus I think they look fantastic with the other colors and decor of the room. I’m pleased as punch!
The other last project were the china plates on the wall. Each of them I found at the thrift store and this was the most expensive part of the project. I think total it was $10 for the plates. I just bent some paperclips and used some crafting glue to attache them to the back of the plates for easy hangers. I think after looking at them for the last week I may want one more smallish plate for the top, but we shall see! So here are some photos of the final finished project!
