Finding a Deal Part II {The Kitchen}
Where do I spend my life? In the kitchen!!! I know a lot of Moms feel that way and especially those who opt to make most of their own foods. It just takes a lot more prep work and planning. Nothing is pre cooked and simple! Continue reading “Finding a Deal Part II {The Kitchen}”
Lard Fried Cauliflower with Dill
So now we are getting lots of cauliflower from the CSA… so there will be a few more of these recipes too! This head we got this week was yellow and beautiful! The kids loved looking at it and kept asking me to make sure it really was cauliflower! So cute they even know it’s supposed to be white and that it garnered that much attention from them! Continue reading “Lard Fried Cauliflower with Dill”
Finding a Good Deal Part I {Intro}
This mini series of posts are probably a year in the making. When I first started writing it I thought I had a lot of good ideas, and I did, but the more I thought about it the more I came up with. I like finding good deals and the economy of our family depends on it. Continue reading “Finding a Good Deal Part I {Intro}”
Apple Date Dip
Eggplant and zucchini season have about passed, and we are also coming to the end of the apple season… however, I still have a bushel of apples sitting on my counter! I’ve already made some apple butter (I’ll post about that soon) and a little bit of applesauce and now I’m working on dried apples. Continue reading “Apple Date Dip”

Kabul Beauty School: An American Woman Goes Behind the Veil
By, Deborah Rodriguez
Since we’ve a new baby (although she is now 8 weeks and growing way too fast) in the house, not much reading has been done. I say that, but I guess I really mean, reading from my reading list. I do read the Bible each morning, read through World Magazine (Similar to Newsweek but from a Christian perspective), Answers Magazine (published by Answers in Genesis), Organic Gardening (free subscription from my last renewal of my HMN membership) and other random assortment of paleo and homeschooling magazines that have been handed down to me. So I do have all that reading and then try to read some fiction and nonfiction on top of it!
But now that Xanthie sleeps for at least 6 hour intervals (her schedule!!! Not something I pushed!) at night I’m feeling more rested and am trying to pick up my reading again.
So my most recent read was [amazon_link id=”0812976738″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Kabul Beauty School[/amazon_link]. I really, really enjoyed it! It is such a refreshing read of a woman who moved to Afghanistan to build and run a beauty school. She did it to help women sustain themselves and build better lives for themselves.
So many of these women don’t leave the home and the one place their husbands do allow them to go is to the beauty shop. There they get to talk and relate with other women and relax and shed some stress from their lives.
Deborah Rodriquez worked incredibly hard to set up the school and keep it running when funding was hard to come by and slow in arriving many times. She stuck it out and shed blood, sweat and tears to make it happen. Just to see how these women thrive and bloom as a result of what they are offered in this school is amazing!
There are many exciting times throughout this read! Times of upheaval, uncertainty in the city of Kabul, peace keeping troops rolling through the city, dangerous neighbors, and the authors own arranged marriage to an Afghan.
I highly recommend this book! I had a hard time putting it down. It must have been an easy read considering I was even able to read it during nighttime feedings and remember where I was the next morning. Even with bleary eyes I was able to read and comprehend!
If you’ve read this book I’d love to know what you think!
Paleo Cauliflower Pizza Crust
I did post a cauliflower pizza crust a little over a year ago, but it had LOTS of cheese in it which tasted fantastic… but not really on our diets these days! the middle two kiddos can’t have any dairy, Tonchi can only have raw dairy and Brian and I can have limited raw dairy! Quite a list to remember… and poor baby Xanthie doesn’t stand a chance. Of course only 6 weeks into her life we aren’t sure if she has any allergies, but we will find out soon enough I’m sure! Continue reading “Paleo Cauliflower Pizza Crust”
Trip to Washington DC
We had a very rare treat this last weekend so I couldn’t help but post about it! My parents organized a camp out at their house for our oldest three. They picked them up Friday late afternoon and then we went out to their house Saturday early afternoon for lunch and to pick up the kids. Continue reading “Trip to Washington DC”
Eggplant Dippers with Paleo Ranch Dressing
This post is pretty much the antithesis of my previous post on Paleo Vegetarian Lasagna.  We til have eggplant arriving by the bushels (or so it seems!) and I HAD to find a way to use it that we would enjoy… so why is this this opposite??? Continue reading “Eggplant Dippers with Paleo Ranch Dressing”
Gout Revisited
About 1 month ago I did a post on gout and now dear hubby is having another episode. Thankfully this one seems to be much shorter in duration than the last few. Maybe because we started our home remedies sooner, but then again maybe not! Continue reading “Gout Revisited”
